Why the OM does it matter?

If you’ve ever chanted the ancient mantra Om in a yoga class or during your meditation practice, you may have experienced a feeling of calm, positive energy, and profound connection. This mantra, often called the “sound of the universe,” possesses great power and has been chanted for thousands of years. Regular chanting of this ancient mantra is far more than a spiritual exercise; it also offers health benefits that enhance our physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

Not only all that, but from a religious standpoint, OM is considered the primordial sound of all creation. It's the vibration of creation. It's also the sound/humming you would hear if you were to go into space.

But why is OM so significant to ancient traditions and cultures all around the world?

Well, if you’re like most, it's not until you have learned the actual science and technique behind OM that you can truly understand the profound benefits of this amazing ancient healing technique.

Bhramari Pranyama aka humming or OM (AUM) chanting, is considered a "Stress Buster".

Studies show that simple OM chanting can lower the stress index in the body more than 8 HOURS OF SLEEP!!!

Some of the other benefits:

  • Helps with nose congestion/chronic stuffiness

  • Raises Immunity

  • Improves Lung function

  • Improves sleep

  • Reduces Heart rate and improves heart health

  • Calms the nervous system

  • Helps improve focus and concentration

  • And so much more!

OM chanting has a profound impact on our overall well-being, helping to balance our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

This technique is perfect for anyone who has had trouble meditating, is neurodivergent, has ADHD, or just finds meditation boring.

The process is extremely easy! All you do is emit sound from an open to closed mouth; that's it!

The goal is not to say or hear the word OM but to be hyper-focused on the vibrations within your body and perhaps try to find the subtler vibrations underneath.

It's that simple!

Some practices and cultures do a certain amount of repetition (like 108 cycles). However, with simple mindfulness techniques, there’s no need to focus on the number; instead, just set a timer (start with 5 mins and gradually work your way up).

Just like any new talent or skill, it takes repetition and consistency to build your technique and really notice where you feel the vibrations in your body.

Tips for best practice

Correct posture and body alignment-

Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight and shoulders relaxed. This will help promote proper breathing technique and allow the free flow of energy throughout the body.

Use diaphragmatic breathing-

Breathe deeply and slowly, allowing your belly to expand on the inhalation. As you exhale, make the sound of Om for the entire duration of your breath. This will help activate your diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing. By using diaphragmic breathing, you not only enhance the resonance and power of your Om chant, but you also bring a sense of calm and grounding to your practice.

Let go of distractions-

As you chant Om, try to let go of any distractions or thoughts that may arise. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to the mantra and its vibrations.

Embrace the silence-

After chanting the Om mantra, allow yourself to bask in the sweet silence that follows. Let the vibrations of the Om mantra continue to resonate within you, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Embrace this stillness and let it envelop your entire being.

The only focus is on the vibrations within, not the sound.

When chanting OM, most experience a sense of peace, positive energy, and profound connection to the universe. Chanting alone is so beneficial. Yet when OM-ing in community, the positive vibrations resonate, creating a powerful energy field. This collective energy can amplify the positive effects of chanting, creating a supportive and uplifting environment for all involved.

Whether you are looking to lower stress and calm the nervous system or simply need a reset. OM chanting is beneficial in so many ways, and will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to accomplish the days ahead with a fresh mindset.

OM chanting can be a truly life-changing technique, and once you learn the basics, you'll receive its messages.
